Wisdom teeth usually come through between the ages of 17 and 25, and many jaws simply do not have room for them. When a wisdom tooth is stuck, growing at an angle or only partly through the gum, it can cause pain, swelling and infection, and damage the tooth next to it.

Signs Your Wisdom Teeth May Need to Come Out
- Pain or pressure at the back of the jaw
- Red, swollen or bleeding gum behind the last molar
- A bad taste or bad breath that keeps coming back
- Food trapping around a tooth you cannot clean properly
- A stiff jaw or trouble opening wide
- Infections in the same spot again and again
No symptoms does not always mean no problem. Impacted wisdom teeth are often found on a routine X-ray before they start to hurt.
Do All Wisdom Teeth Need to Be Removed?
An Honest Answer Before Any Treatment
No. If your wisdom teeth have come through straight, you can clean them properly and they are not causing trouble, they can usually stay. We will simply keep an eye on them at your check-ups.
We recommend removal when a tooth is impacted, keeps getting infected, is decaying, or is damaging the tooth in front of it. It is generally easier to remove wisdom teeth in your late teens and twenties, when the roots are not fully formed and healing is quicker. That is why it is worth having them checked early rather than waiting for pain.
What Happens During Wisdom Tooth Extraction?
Step by Step, With No Surprises
- Consultation and X-ray. We look at the position of the tooth and its roots and explain what is involved, including the cost, before you decide.
- Numbing. The area is fully numbed with local anaesthetic. You will feel pressure but should not feel pain.
- Removal. A tooth that has come through is removed much like any other. An impacted tooth may need a small opening in the gum and is sometimes taken out in sections.
- Aftercare. We may place a few stitches, and you go home with clear aftercare instructions.
Dr Liza Mekhael has a special focus on oral surgery. If you are anxious, or the extraction is more involved, sedation is available so you can stay relaxed throughout. If your case needs a specialist, we will arrange a referral to an oral surgeon.
Recovery After Wisdom Teeth Removal
What to Expect in the First Week
Most people are back to normal activities within two to three days, and the gum heals over one to two weeks. Some swelling and tenderness is normal for the first few days.
- Bite on the gauze pack for 30 to 45 minutes to stop the bleeding.
- Hold a cold pack against your cheek on the first day.
- Eat soft, cool foods such as yoghurt, soup and mashed vegetables.
- Do not smoke, spit, rinse hard or drink through a straw for the first 24 hours. This can dislodge the clot and cause a painful dry socket.
- From the next day, rinse gently with warm salty water after meals.
